Anyone know a diet for the female dog containing a water puppy?
STEVEN P asked:
A bulldog has a water puppy inside of her. Does anyone know of a low salt diet for the mother to be put on until she has her litter?
Can the puppy be saved while still in the birthing horn?

The puppy is going to die shortly after birth if not before. You will likely have to have a C-section done if the pup is really swollen. There is nothing you can do but wait. The mothers diet should be a raw diet.
Treatment:
Treatment needs to be given right away for a mildly effected pup.
– Elevate the head and extend the neck for a more clear air way.
– To encourage urination run one or two fingers over the genitalia.
– Some veterinarians have recently had great success using Lasix in saving water puppies. Lasix is the brand name of the chemical Furosemide. Furosemide is a diuretic-saluretic, which inhibits the re-absorption of sodium (salt). The drug is administered intravenously immediately after birth of the water puppy. Administer furosemide (Lasix) .1 to .2 ml intramuscularly, to increase urination, this can be repeated every 30 to 45 minutes for three injections. Caution: more than three could cause dehydration.
– Keep the pups warm and stimulate urination as described above every 2 – 3 minutes.
– Elastic bandages have also been used to push out fluid (not too tight).
Mildly effected pups can take 1 to 2 hours to breathe normally. Moderately effected pups take 90 minutes to 4 hours to breathe normal. Medium to severely effected pups are difficult to save, they usually drown within 30 minutes. Severely bloated pups, have been known to split open at the abdomen, just from handling.
Some signs for you to watch your pregnant female for are: drinking large amounts of water, nipples and surrounding tissues have a shiny look, nipples produce a fluid, very early in pregnancy.
Autopsies have shown, that the organs are saturated in fluid and the life sustaining organs, cannot function, causing the pups to drown.
Don’t feed this mother anything by Science Diet or Nutro.. It’s over priced garbage. Feed NO grains in a raw diet. That is the only thing that would help her. There is a lot of water already in raw food so it would greatly cut down on her water consumption. Feeding a dry cereal only creates a thirsty dog to get all that dry crap digested. Common sense here… Freedom
for the food, you can try Science Diet H/D or Nutro Natural Choice for Adults, as there is no added salt. Folic Acid added to the female’s diet will help prevent anemia. This can be found in a pharmacy or health food store, along with liver extract capsules.
Water pups are born alive because their oxygen and nutrition is being delivered from the dam, through the umbilical cord. After birth, the pup’s lungs should start functioning, however, when they are full of fluid, they often suffocate soon after birth.
The mild to medium effected pups that survive the first 2 – 3 days, seem to become normal.
Treatment needs to be immediate and intense for a water pup. First, elevate the head and extend the neck for a more clear air way. Take one or two fingers and rub the genitalia to encourage urination. Administer furosemide(Lasix) .1 to .2 ml intramuscularly, to increase urination, this can be repeated every 30 to 45 minutes for three injections. Be careful because more than three could cause dehydration. Keep the puppies warm and stimulate urination like described above every 2 – 3 minutes. Don’t give up: mildly effected pups can take 30 to 90 minutes to breath normally. Moderately effected pups take 90 minutes to 4 hours to breath more normal. Severely effected pups are difficult to save, they usually drown before 30 minutes have passed.
I suggest having a Vet on hand throughout the whole process, but depending on the severity of the problem, there’s a chance you may lose the puppy. Kimberly A
Hey, you need to go to this website and hurry before she has the litter! She needs to have a C-section!
And YES the baby CAN BE SAVED, but go read this. It is interesting and it has a lot of pictures for you to see what to expect!!
Don’t allow her to birth on her own. The water baby will block the birth canal and you will have big time problems!!!
Hope this helps you!!! Good luck and God Bless!! kentuckywildfire
Put that mother dog on Laxix as soon as possile. My vet . put my mother dog on this ang when the puppies were born he gave them a shot of it. They are 15 days old now. I wish you the best of luck!!
