KidHorn asked:

I was drinking diet mt dew and looked at the ingredients. The 2nd ingredient listed is orange juice concentrate. I’m pretty sure orange juice concentrate has calories. It’s basically orange juice syrup. So how can diet mt dew contain orange juice concentrate and have 0 calories?

  1. Mmont says:

chances are they remove the sugar from the concentrate, leaving an ester-like substance behind. Mmont

Orange juice concentrate has about 14 calories per fluid ounce. I bet that there isn’t more than 1/10 of one percent juice in that can. But, lets say for the sake of science, that there is 1% juice (which I doubt), and it’s a 12 ounce can. If you do the math, the total calories from juice is 1.68. The U.S. government says that the label can legally state the product is calorie free, or “zero calorie” if it contains less than 5, yes, five calories….per serving. It can say it’s lo-cal if it has less than 40 calories….per serving. So, your soda could be almost 3% orange juice before they would have to strip it of its no calorie claim. kfhaggerty
